The Alexakis Vidiano 2013 won an international gold medal in the annual Decanter World Wine Awards competition held in London. The award ceremony took place at ΤheBlueFinBuilding in London, on June 24, 2014. This year’s competition counted just short of 15,000 entries.
The DWWA competition was established in 2004 by renowned British wine critic, StephenSpurrier, and is managed by Decanter, Britain’s wine magazine. Ever since, it has retained its place as an outstanding European wine competition.“The DecanterWorldWineAwards competition is here to recognize and award quality. I think that is what has made the DWWA the most important wine competition in the world,” says Spurrier, chairman of the DWWA and head of the panel of judges.
Each year, thousands of wines are submitted for review by the DWWA’s judging committee.
Four bottles, accompanied by each wine’s technical characteristics, as well as its FOB/Ex-Cellar and retail prices, are shipped to Decanter’s warehouse from the wineries wishing to participate in the competition. They are registered, sorted by category and coded according to the country and region of origin. The entries are also classified by colour, grape variety, style, vintage and price, in order to ensure a correct like-to-like comparison. There are five price categories, ranging from 10 to over 75 euros per bottle.
All entries first undergo a preliminary evaluation, before proceeding to the subsequent official steps. Each wine is assessed by a number of judges, under the Regional Chair or category specialist. The 224-strong judging team is selected from a wide spectrum of professionals, including wine producers, retail sellers and wine writers-journalists. The judges taste the samples according to the region, the style and the price category of each wine. They then compare notes in order to reach a consensus about the trophy awarded to each wine. Wines awarded a gold or a silver medal are re-tasted for confirmation.
Besides the three categories of medals, there are also wines that earn the distinction of being “Commended” by the show’s judges. These are wines that have not won a medal, but are nonetheless considered worthy of mention.
At the same competition, alongside the top-ranking AlexakisVidiano 2013, our ΑlexakisHandakas-Candia 2013 (white) was awarded a Commended label.
Ηere are Decanter’s tasting notes for our Vidiano 2013: “The alluring, appealing aromas are of fresh stone fruit interwoven with hints of wet sand and seaweed. Palate shows passion fruit, grapefruit and lime with a long spicy finish. Wonderful blend of fruit and earth with potential for a long and lively life.”
